TEACHO Ltd. has established a fellowship which aims to promote research in industrial relations to commemorate the many contributions of former TEACHO Ltd. Managing Director, Dr. Daryll Hull, the first PhD graduate in industrial relations at UNSW.
Nature of the Award
The fellowship/scholarship will be awarded every two years to a successful candidate student at an Australian university undertaking a research degree (Research Masters or PhD) in the field of industrial relations, including occupational health and safety, labour history and other subfields of industrial relations.
The award will be of $15,000 over 2 years (payable in two annual instalments) to the applicant judged the most noteworthy in terms of industrial relations scholarship, research subject and policy relevance.
Determination Process
Applications will be advertised and invited every two years, with the successful applications being evaluated and determined within three months of that date. TEACHO reserves the right not to make an award if no candidate is deemed sufficiently meritorious.
Applications will be considered in a two-stage process:
- The TEACHO Dr. Daryll Hull Memorial Selection Committee (comprising TEACHO Ltd. Director, Emeritus Professor Michael Quinlan and three distinguished academics/industrial relations practitioners) will evaluate the applications, prepare a shortlist of most noteworthy applicants (and the criteria for this assessment) and rank the candidates. Selection criteria include:
Essential
- Strong industrial relations focus of the thesis
- High quality aims and methods of the thesis
- Appropriate qualifications and experience of applicant
- Significant likely contribution to advancing industrial relations knowledge
- Sound policy relevance
Desirable
- Likely contribution to Daryll’s area of interest (including transport/logistics, Occupational Health and Safety, productivity, work organisation, youth and e-democracy)
- The Committee will present its recommendations to the TEACHO board which will then make the final assessment and determination.

The successful applicant will then be duly notified (as will unsuccessful applicants, after the successful applicant has indicated they will accept the award).
